What I Wore: Skirts and Dresses

Well, I managed to wear skirts or dresses for 8 straight days and got photos of 6 of the outfits. The weather started out cool and quickly progressed to hot. :) I really enjoyed wearing all of these pieces and am hoping to continue wearing more skirts and dresses now!

Work outfit: Cardigan and dress: Target, Shoes: Payless, Bracelet: Target, Necklace and earrings: Avon

Comfy outfit for home: Skirt: Banana Republic (Thrifted), Capri leggings: Meijer, Shirt: Target, Necklace: Avon, Leopard flats: Payless

This skirt is a little shorter than I like to wear by itself, but when I saw it at Goodwill, I loved it so much, I brought it home. This is my first time wearing a skirt with leggings, and it was so comfortable. I've thought about making a lace extender slip to wear under it as well and I think it will be great with tights and boots in the fall/winter/spring.

Work Outfit: Skirt: Penneys, Shirt: LOFT (Thrifted), Flats: Target, Earrings: Avon

I didn't love how this outfit photographed, but I really liked wearing it. The skirt is super old, but the stripes seemed perfect and paired with the gold, I thought it was pretty. I had a denim jacket on with it in the morning, and the layers added some nice interest.

Weekend outfit: Shirt: Mossimo (Thrifted), Skirt: Nicole from JCPenney (Garage Sale), Scarf: Target (Garage Sale), Sandals: Born via 6pm.com, Bracelet: Shabby Apple, Earrings: Groopdealz

Probably my favorite outfit of the week! I also realized that except for the sandals and the jewelry, everything is from Goodwill or garage sales.

Church/home outfit: Dress: Merona (Thrifted), Tank: Meijer, Necklace Set: A Tad Monroe, Sandals: Born via 6pm.com

Home/VBS teaching outfit: Tank: Target, Skirt: Express (Thrifted), Sandals: Born, Necklace: Elder-Beerman, Earrings: Avon

This was a new color combo for me - the skirt is actually yellow and white striped. I don't typically wear lighter colored pieces like this, but I like this skirt a lot!

Do you typically wear lots of skirts and dresses? What are your favorite outfits for hot weather?

Favorite Garage Sale Finds of the Summer (So Far!)

I've mentioned in the past that we really enjoy going to garage sales. This past weekend there were a ton of sales in our area and I found some of my favorite finds so far this season!

I don't have pictures of everything, but my daughter always finds books (which she loves) and she also got an Angelina Ballerina DVD ($0.75) and a sweet little Disney fairies playset ($2). We also got her a Hello Kitty denim jacket with rhinestones, a cardigan, a tank top, and a heart t-shirt (new with tags) for $1 each. A couple weeks ago, I also found a darling Lilly Pulitzer sundress for my daughter (pictured above) with tags for $4 - more than I usually spend, but so cute!

I also found a pair of Elle skinny jeans, a pair of indigo Bandolino Blu cropped jeans for $2 each, and a mauve-toned snakeskin print scarf for $1. I am especially excited about the skinny jeans because mine had to be retired due to a hole. :) I also already wore the scarf and will get to show it to you on Wednesday!

My absolute favorite find was this Pyrex Friendship Bird casserole dish. The Friendship Bird pattern is one that I have been looking for and when I saw this at a sale for $1, I was beyond excited. It is in amazing condition and was a great deal, especially since it is in such good shape!

Do you go to yard sales or garage sales? Any amazing finds this summer?

Thursday Thoughts

Happy Thursday! I just wanted to stop in and share a couple of things this afternoon.

First, I want to tell you about a great code for thredUP. I've written about thredUP in the past, and have actually sent clothes in and received credit as well as purchased clothes from them. They have children's and women's clothing available. I ordered the floral maxi dress shown above from thredUP (using credit from clothes I sent them) and am waiting for it to arrive.

New users of thredUP can get $15 off their first order by using the code JUNE15. Offer is good through tomorrow, Friday, June 21. Shipping starts at $2.99 for the first item. Please note, the link to thredUP above is my affiliate link. Normally, you get $10 off your first order and I would get $10 after you place your first order, but I don't know if that works with the $15 deal. Let me know if you can use it and find anything good!

I also wanted to share that the giveaway at For Lauren and Lauren is up! We are giving away a $5 Starbucks card and your choice of any item from the shop. There are a bunch of other great prizes you can win as well including gift cards, a necklace, a scarf and more, so stop over and enter!

What I Wore: Statement Necklaces

When I looked back at some of my recent outfit photos, I noticed I've replaced my scarves with statement necklaces. I like how pretty necklaces can dress up an outfit and change the look easily.

This was a casual look that I wasn't too crazy about when I had it on, but I like it better in this photo.
Capris: St. John's Bay (thrifted), Shirt: Handmade, Necklace and Earrings: A Tad Monroe, Flats: LUV Footwear

Lace Shirt: Old Navy, Maxi Skirt: Kohl's, Necklace: Penney's, Sandals: Target, Earrings: Avon

I wore this outfit to work on Saturday. It was chilly when the day started, but got really warm and humid. I picked up this blouse at Goodwill. I was looking for colorful pieces and love this one. I think it matches all of my colored pants (hot pink, coral, purple, and green) plus it works well with neutrals. It is technically sleeveless, so it was only $2.29 at Goodwill instead of the $4.29 price they charge for long and short sleeved tops. I think I will be wearing this blouse a lot!

Cardigan: Kohl's, Pants: Target, Shirt: AGB (Goodwill), Wedges: Payless, Earrings: Avon, Necklace: Mark (Avon)

Here it is without the cardigan.

And with comfy boat shoes for the rest of the day after work. Boat shoes from Target.

Next week, I'm planning to show you 7 days of skirts and dresses!

What is your favorite summertime accessory for dressing up an outfit?

Cat Tales, Hydrangeas, Skirts, and a Giveaway Winner

I'm so excited - our hydrangeas are blooming! They are so beautiful this year. :) I love blue and purple flowers.

I have to tell you a story about our cat. This is Ella. She is just over a year old and she has such a funny personality. So sweet, but then she can drive us totally crazy. She wakes us up around 5:00 a.m. most days and even the vet has commented on her personality.

My husband bought new shoe laces on Sunday and put them in his shoes on Monday. After dinner on Monday, I walked by the front door where his shoes were and I asked him what happened to the new laces. He had no idea what I was talking about...so he came to look. All we can figure out is that Ella thought they smelled good or different or something and totally destroyed them. You can see in the photo below that she shredded them. They look like tassels. :)

I really enjoyed the 7x7 remix challenge last week and I like the idea of doing some more fashion challenges to do a better job of wearing all my clothes and remixing my closet. I like skirts and dresses and have quite a few, but I haven't been wearing them as often lately. I mentioned to this my husband, and he suggested that I try wearing only skirts and dresses for a solid week. I thought it was a great idea, so the plan is next Wednesday, I will share 7 different ways to wear skirts and dresses. :) Do you feel like you wear skirts or pants more often? Any interest in linking up a week of skirts and dresses?

Finally, here is the summer prize pack giveaway winner! The winner is entry #5 - Nikita! Thanks so much to everyone for reading and entering!

Monday Odds and Ends

What? It's Monday again?? Another weekend is past and a new week is ready to begin. Hope you had a good weekend with your family and friends. I can't believe June is already over halfway over!

Speaking of June...less than 2 weeks until Google Reader is finished. I have switched over to Bloglovin', but I still have been using Reader. This week, I am going to try to get into the habit of reading my blogs through Bloglovin'. I'd love to have you follow me there.

We had a nice Fathers' Day - got ice cream from the best local ice cream place, enjoyed dinner with my family, read books, and relaxed. Speaking of reading, here's what we're reading right now:

We've been enjoying going to garage sales and finding some great items. I should take some photos and share some of our favorites soon. We hadn't found any Pyrex until my parents went to a tag sale this weekend and picked up 2 Amish Butterprint casserole dishes. They are so pretty and they match the bowl from my grandparents' house. Now to find some Pink Gooseberry...

Week 2 of summer reading programs starts today. Which explains why I have 2 pans of "magic treasure rocks" in my kitchen. :) They are a fun and simple science activity for kids, though. You can see our video of when we tried it here.

I'll end with a bit of giveaway news: You can still enter to win our summer giveaway through today. I'd love it it if you stopped by and entered! We are also participating in a giveaway at for Lauren and Lauren, so check there for the post as well.

What are your plans for today and this week? How was your weekend?

What I Wore: 7x7 Remix

Last week, Audrey at Putting Me Together posted about a 7x7 remix that she was going to participate in at Ma Nouvelle Mode. I thought it sounded like a fun challenge, so I decided to try it and link up. It was really hard to pick my 7 items, especially since the 7 choices had to include shoes. I played around with a variety of different combinations, but ultimately had to make a few last minute changes because it has been so chilly here! The beginning of the week barely made it above 60 and it was gray and dreary most of the time. I also decided to actually wear these pieces for 7 days in a row (not sure if we were supposed to or not), so I had to think about how many work/casual outfits I needed.

Here are the 7 pieces I decided on:

7x7 Items June 2013

1. 3/4 Sleeve Yellow Striped Knit Shirt (Elder-Beerman)
2. Chambray Shirt (Croft and Barrow)
3. Lilac T-Shirt (Merona via ThredUp)
4. Gray Textured Ankle Pants (Mossimo)
5. Black Tiered Skirt (Nicole for JCPenney via garage sale for $0.75)
6. Dark Denim Jeans (Gap via Goodwill)
7. Black Peep Toe Shoes (Payless)
Here are the outfits!

Day 1: Chambray Shirt + Black Skirt + Black Peep Toes
I added the scarf, belt, and bracelet for some extra color.

Day 2: Yellow Striped Shirt + Gray Pants + Black Peep Toes
I wore the scarf for warmth (as well as for the color) and added a bracelet and earrings in purple and gold. I was exhausted by the time we took this photo! This outfit was really comfy and warm enough for lots of running around at work as well as for home.

Day 3: Chambray Shirt + Dark Denim Jeans + Black Peep Toes
This was the first time I've ever worn chambray with denim. I think it worked pretty well since the shirt is so much lighter than the jeans. The necklace I added is one of my favorites. It has lots of different beads in a variety of colors.

Day 4:  Lilac T-Shirt + Dark Denim Jeans + Black Peep Toes
Can you tell I love scarves?? :) I definitely was glad to have lots of different scarves during this challenge. It was cool enough to wear them and they helped me feel like my outfits looked different by adding them to various combinations.

Day 5: Chambray Shirt + Gray Textured Pants + Black Peep Toes
I wore this outfit to church. Nothing too fancy, but it was comfortable and polished. I added the bubble necklace and earrings which helped dress it up a bit.

Day 6: Yellow Striped Shirt + Dark Denim Jeans + Black Peep Toes
I decided to roll/cuff the jeans on this day since it was a little warmer, and I like how they look. I added a turquoise necklace and earrings plus a colorful bracelet to finish this outfit.

Day 7: Lilac T-Shirt + Black Tiered Skirt + Black Peep Toes
Last day! I wore this outfit for lots of programs at work. I like the length of this skirt. It is feminine but easy to move around in and works when I have to get down on the floor with the kids. I feel like this outfit needed a different accessory or something, but it worked fine.

7x7 Remix Outfits

My favorite looks were days 1, 4, and 5. I did like the look of the cuffed jeans on day 6.
The Verdict/What I Learned:
-This was harder than I expected, but doable! I got up on Day 4 and really wanted to give up, but I am glad I decided to finish out the seven days.
-It was really easy to get ready since I didn't have too many choices!
-Wearing only one pair of shoes really bugged me. Silly, I know, but I like shoes!
-I relied heavily on scarves and jewelry to change up the looks. These accessories get a lot of use for me and are a good use of my clothing budget.
-I'd like to get a couple of pieces with multiple colors - a skirt with a floral print that matches a lot of my tops or a top with a print that has lots of colors. These pieces would be versatile and add some color to my wardrobe.
-If I try this again, I'd like to try a colorful pair of pants or a print skirt to add some interest. The dark denim pants and gray ankle pants look really similar. I stuck to basics this time and I think more color and pattern would be fun in the future! I think choosing 15 pieces for a couple of weeks might be a good challenge, too, but with a little more variety.
I'm linking up with all the other remix looks at Putting Me Together!

A New Week + a Giveaway

Whew! Where did last week go? It was definitely a crazy one around here! Lots of last minute details for work, a (thankfully) minor family emergency, new classes, new schedule...you know the feeling. I am hoping this week is a bit calmer and that we can settle into our summer routine. This post is going to full of odds and ends, nothing too exciting. :)

This song was a part of our worship set this morning. It's a good one.

I'm working on sewing up a purse for my mom's birthday. Hopefully, I'll have some pictures to share later thi week. After I finish, I'm thinking about making a batch of pouches or mug rugs for the shop and then maybe some pillows for our bedroom. Plus a maxi skirt for my mom. :)

I'm on Day 5 of my 7x7 remix. Two more days of outfits! I've been working on my post for Wednesday. It's been a good challenge, but hard! You can see the items I chose here.

Last week, I started the book Anything with a couple of friends as a part of the Summer Good Morning Girls study. Very interesting and thought-provoking already.

Finally, it's time for a giveaway! Enter using the Rafflecopter below to win these goodies (pictured above):
  • A green and silver Avon necklace and earrings set
  • A set of the new Avon nail art design strips and a floral nail file
  • A Smash book (wedding themed, but most of the pages are not really bridal related)

Book Review: Gone South

http://www.randomhouse.com/images/dyn/cover/?source=9780307730800&width=1000

Gone South by Meg Moseley is a contemporary Christian fiction novel set in Noble, Alabama.  When Tish McComb leaves Michigan to help her mother move to Florida, she takes the opportunity to take a detour by a historic home where her McComb ancestors once lived. When she discovers the home is for sale, she makes an impulsive decision to buy the home and move to Noble. She creates a picture in her mind of settling in this quaint southern town and starting a new life. She is shocked to find out that her ancestors were not well thought of in Noble - and despite the fact that it is hundreds of years later, she is ostracized as a McComb as well. She begins to make friends with a few people including her neighbor George and takes in a young woman named Melanie who has been kicked out of her home.

First of all, I think the cover of this book is amazing. It is a great cover and draws a lot of attention. The characters and setting of the book are quite interesting and enjoyable. I think the author does a wonderful job of placing the reader in the midst of this small southern town. In many ways, the novel really is a modern exploration of the prodigal son story. So often, we judge people based on their past behavior or even how we expect them to act instead of giving them a chance to show us they've changed. The book also ties in the importance of family. Overall, this was a very pleasant, leisurely read.

I did receive a copy of this book from WaterBrook Multnomah in exchange for this review; all opinions are my own.

For more, visit Meg Moseley's web site.

What are you reading right now? I love to get new book recommendations!

May 2013 Clothing Purchases

My purchases in May have been kind of strange. Several "misses" - things that didn't fit that I needed to take back or sell for various reasons. I got a great deal on some leather Target flats ($4.36 after coupon), but they ended up not fitting me, so I sold them. The black skirt from last month didn't fit, so that is in a bag to be sold. I also had a bit of a disaster with some new running shoes and they were returned as well. Sigh.

So, what did I spend my money on? :)

May Purchases and Budget

  • Blue gingham shirt - $3 (garage sale)
  • Kohl's patriotic tee - $2.11
  • Green skinny jeans - $12.78 (Kohl's)
  • Rain boots - $10.54 (Target)
  • Express gray cropped pants - $3 (garage sale)
  • Gray blazer - $2.83 (Goodwill)
  • Long Dark Red Necklace - $5 (A Tad Monroe)
  • Red Banana Republic Skirt - (Goodwill, purchased with gift certificate)
Total: $39.26
I also got some New Balance 890 running shoes and the floral scarf and boat shoes pictured above were Mothers' Day gifts. I'm not including these items in my monthly budget.

I also made myself 2 new tops and a skirt. At this point, I'm not including handmade expenses in my clothing budget, but am taking them from my "fabric" envelope. If I continue to make myself clothes, I may shift this around and take fabric and supply costs from my clothing budget.

For June, my goal is going to be to sew up a couple more handmade items that I already have purchased fabric to make and try and stick to thrifting (I still have around $15 in gift certificates to Goodwill!) and garage sales. One exception would be for sandals. I am looking for a couple of print dresses, a pair or two of capris or shorts, and a couple of dressier sleeveless blouses.

How did you do this month with clothing shopping?
