July Purchases and Budget

It feels more like October here today, but we're almost to the end of July! Time for a quick budget roundup for clothes and accessories this month. I did buy quite a bit this month, but most of it was bought second-hand. :) I don't have pictures of everything, but here's the breakdown of what I bought.

July Purchases and Budget

Garage Sales:
  • Denim jacket - $5 (made into a vest)
  • Striped dress - $2
  • Apt. 9 polka dot blouse - $1 (so excited about this one!)
  • Style and Co. long-sleeve tunic/dress - $2 (still had the tags on it)
  • St. John's Bay brown and tan striped cardigan - $2
Goodwill:
  • Anne Klein print tunic blouse - $3.25
  • Axcess print wrap dress - $5.68
Kohl's:
  • Light green 3/4 sleeve tee - $3.50
  • Gold cross earrings - $2.10
Target:
  • Print scarf - $5.34
  • Camel colored belt - gift card
Twice:
  • Light green NY and Co pants - $6.16
Plato's Closet:
  • Dark olive GAP stretch ankle pants - $1.07
JCPenney:
  • Ankle boots - $13.83
Total: $52.93

I am pleased I was able to find some pants and dresses this month. Those are always tough for me to find. I also really like the ankle boots.

I'm trying to figure out a shopping strategy for August. This will be the last month for garage sales around here, so I definitely want to keep an eye out there. That being said, I need to pay attention to some of the core pieces I still want and the replacements I'd like to get. Some of these items include a gray tee shirt, black skinnies, and cognac riding boots.

Summer Remix: Outfits 25-31

If you're following along -this is it! The last set of outfits in the 20x30 remix. I'll save most of my reflections for next week's round up, but honestly, I really didn't feel burned out wearing my pieces until the last couple of days, which is pretty good in my book! Here are the last 7 outfits!

Outfit 25: Mint Cardigan + Blue Tee + Jeans (I added this as my 20th piece, but only wore it once.) + Colorful Flats Necklaces

I actually changed into this outfit one day after work because it was so chilly!

Outfit 26: Tan Pants + Navy Striped Top + Floral Scarf + Metallic Sandals

Outfit 27: Black Tee + Black Shorts + Mint Cardigan + Colorful Scarf + Metallic Sandals

Outfit 28: Gray Tee + Boyfriend Jeans + Tennis Shoes + Floral Scarf

This wasn't my favorite outfit - maybe the shoes? - but it made a comfy travel outfit on a cool rainy day.

Outfit 29: Chambray + White Crops + Metallic Sandals + Colorful Necklace

Outfit 30: Plum Tee + Gray Maxi Dress + Cognac Wedges + Lilac Necklace

I liked the look of this and it basically looked like a skirt and tee. My daughter thought this was such a cool "trick". She kept talking about it.

Outfit 31: Black and White Striped Dress + Black Tee + Metallic Sandals + White and Gold Necklace

I was kind of desperate on the last day for a work outfit, so I did the dress and top combo again. It worked, though, and I was comfy and dressed appropriately for work, so it worked!

I will be back next week with a round up of all the looks and a few final thoughts. :)

Thanks for reading!

Summer Remix: Outfits 17-24

Here are 8 more outfits in this summer's remix challenge!

Outfit 17: Striped Dress + Mint Cardigan + Metallic Sandals + Necklace

Outfit 18: Lime Green Tee + White Crops + Metallic Sandals + Scarf

Outfit 19: Black Tee + Boyfriend Jeans + Metallic Sandals + Colorful Scarf

Outfit 20: Chambray + Plum Tee + Denim Shorts + Brown Sandals

Outfit 21: Gray Tee + Maxi Skirt + Metallic Sandals + Necklaces

Outfit 22: Pastel Button Down + Boyfriend Jeans + Metallic Sandals

Outfit 23: Striped Dress + Chambray Shirt + Cognac Wedges + Turquoise Jewelry

Outfit 24: Blue Tee + Denim Vest + White Crops + Metallic Sandals + Necklaces

Reflections and thoughts for this week:
  • It's been cool here, so layering with cardigans and scarves has worked well.
  • I tried knotting my shirt in Outfit 21 (thanks to your suggestions!) and it added some shape to the outfit, I think.
  • I also wore my chambray knotted over my dress, trying to give it a skirt/top look.
  • I won a really cool Origami Owl locket and I bought the Target scarf in Outfit 19 for $5.24. It's been fun to have some new accessories to add to outfits.
  • My boyfriend jeans and white crops were both thrifted and I love them both.
  • I wouldn't mind a new pair of shorts (colored or print) and another pair of pants in a really versatile color. Pants are so hard to find!
  • My favorite looks were 19, 22, and 24.
If you're participating in the remix challenge, how is it going? We're in the home stretch!

Summer Remix: Outfits 9-16

Here are the next 8 outfits in the summer remix challenge!

Outfit 9: Lime Green Tee + Boyfriend Jeans + Sandals + Long Gold Necklace (Avon)

Outfit 10: Black Tee + Tan Pants + Scarf (Gift, new with tags at garage sale) + Sandals

Outfit 11: Gray Tee + White Crops + Mint Cardigan + Metallic Sandals + Necklace and Earrings (Avon)

I managed to get my hair in a bun!

I tried to get a pic of some of the outfit details. I am not great with those kinds of shots. :) I just got this necklace and the matching earrings and I love it. I've been wearing it a lot as you will see below.

Outfit 12: Navy Striped Top (1st wildcard addition) + Denim Shorts + Necklace + Boat Shoes (Target from last year)

Outfit 13: Chambray + Black Shorts + Leopard Scarf + Sandals + Gold Hoops

Outfit 14: Gray Maxi + Denim Vest + Cognac Wedges + Necklace and Earrings Set

Outfit 15: Boyfriend Jeans + Blue Tee + Sandals + Scarf (Thrifted)

Outfit 16: Floral Skirt + Black Tee + Metallic Sandals + the same jewelry :) :)

Halfway point plus remix thoughts:
As I am writing this, I am wearing outfit #20 using my remix pieces, so I am 2/3 of the way there. I can tell I will need to be a bit more creative for the last few looks, but overall I've been really pleased with my pieces. A couple observations/comments about the challenge so far -
  • It's not been super hot here, so I've had opportunities to wear a lot of my scarves as well as my cardigan. This next week looks cooler, too.
  • I like mixing/matching blue, gray, tan, and black. These are my favorite neutrals!
  • It's been a lot easier to get dressed with fewer pieces. The night before, I usually take a look at the weather, think about my day (whether I work, have church, meetings, day off, etc), and then refer to my list of ideas and see what outfits are left. Overall, I haven't had a major "getting dressed crisis" in awhile.
  • I haven't felt inclined to wander around and shop quite as much. I got the necklace set above, and I have been looking for pants and riding boots for fall. Hoping to get a good sale price on boots before the fall collections come out! Any suggestions about where to shop?
  • I've been wearing shorts and feeling pretty comfortable in them. It's been quite awhile since I've worn shorts consistently.
  • I don't have a lot of versatile prints in my wardrobe.
  • I've been pretty much wearing the same two pairs of sandals all summer.
**The Avon links above do link my online Avon store. If you're ever interested in buying or selling Avon, please send me a message. Thanks!

That's all for now! If you are participating, how is your remix going?

Review: Influenster TLCVoxBox

A few weeks back, I was notified by Influenster that I would be receiving the TLCVoxBox. I love trying out new products, so I was excited to see what I'd get.

Here's what was inside the box:
  • Neosporin Neo to Go!
  • A coupon for a free tub of Breyers Gelato Indulgences
  • Ivory Bar Soap
  • Avon Anew Reversalist Express Wrinkle Smoother
  • Puffs to Go pack
  • Shell Fuel Rewards Network Card
The Breyers Gelato was amazing! We got our freebie the day after we got the coupon and tried the Triple Chocolate flavor. It was so good! Highly recommend! The Puffs have a new home in my purse - we needed them for a summer cold my daughter had a few weeks ago. The Neo to Go has been used several times already, too. My daughter seems to like this and it is great for bumps and scrapes that need tending when we are away from home. I also loved the retro packaging on the Ivory soap.

I've signed up for the Shell Fuel Rewards program, but have not used the card yet. Most of our Shell stations are not on our typical route for getting gas and running errands, so we don't usually stop at Shell. I definitely want to give this a try in the future. I was also excited to see the Avon product. Because I am an Independent Sales Representative for Avon, I am not going to review this product, but it was nice to see an Avon product in the box!

I received this products for free from Influenster; all opinions are my own.

Summer Remix: Outfits 1-8

I have to confess, as soon as the Summer Remix Challenge was announced, I started picking pieces and wearing outfits made up of the pieces. I already am close to halfway through the challenge. Today I'm sharing my first 8 outfits.

This time, I wrote up a list of outfits based on the pieces and I'm checking them off as I wear them. It's been nice to have a list of outfit ideas to refer to and I was able to create a list of over 50 outfits - and I could make more! Really interesting to see how many options can be made from so few clothing choices.

Outfit 1: Maxi Dress + Scarf (thrifted) + Hoops (Avon) + Metallic Sandals (Payless)

Outfit 2: Plum Tee + Boyfriend Jeans + Necklace (Avon) + Sandals (Born via 6pm.com) + Cognac Bag (Apt. 9, thrifted)

Outfit 3: Black Tee + White Pants + Turquoise Scarf (Kohl's) + Turquoise Earrings (Avon) + Cognac Wedges (Leather, Merona, thrifted)

This outfit was inspired by this pin.

This bracelet is one my favorites. My friend bought it for me from a street vendor in Brazil. Love the colors and it worked perfectly with this outfit!

Outfit 4: Blue Tee + Tan Pants + Scarf (Clothes Mentor) + Earrings (Meijer) + Sandals (Born)

Outfit 5: Grey Tee + Denim Shorts + Tennis Shoes (Saucony via 6pm.com) + Scarf (Maurices)

Outfit 6: Pastel Button Down + Black Shorts + Metallic Sandals (Payless) + Fedora (JCPenney)

Outfit 7: Striped Dress + Denim Vest + Cognac Wedges + Turquoise Jewelry (Avon)

Outfit 8: Maxi Skirt + Blue Tee + Necklace + Earrings + Metallic Sandals

Let's see...it has been a long time since I've worn shorts. I only own 2 pairs, the ones shown above, except for running shorts. The black shorts or super old and the denim ones were thrifted fairly recently. I think I liked outfits 2, 3, and 6 the best and number 8 the least. The maxi skirt and dress have been super comfy for busy days at work so far.

Link Round Up: Week 5

Hope your 4th of July was great! We managed some impromptu blueberry picking this week after dance class and stopped at our local Farmer's Market and quilt shop this morning. I bought some cream Bella solid fabric to try some embroidery while I am sitting at swimming lessons this month. :)

Lots of fashion-related links today!

Hope you are enjoying your summer! Happy weekend!

Book Review: Full Steam Ahead

Full Steam Ahead by Karen Witemeyer is a novel full of intrigue, faith, romance, and suspense. Set in the mid-1800's, Nicole Renard is the only child of the owner of a large shipping company. She is intelligent, spirited, determined, and brave, but as a female in that day and age, she is unable to take over her father's shipping business. She returns to her home in Texas and finds her father gravely ill, so she sets off on a journey to find a husband and therefore an heir for her father. Through a series of detours (involving the mysterious Lafitte Dagger), she finds herself as Darius Thornton's secretary. Darius comes across as a somewhat crazy scientist, so focused on studying boilers and making them explode that he forgets to eat and sleep. Nicole soon learns there is much more to Darius than meets the eye, and even begins to care for him, even though she knows she must leave soon to fulfill her promise to her father.

The cover of this book first attracted my attention. I really like the expression on the face of woman on the front of the book and I just love the dress. I've always loved historical fashion. The book itself is a nice mix of action, suspense, romance, and drama. The characters in the book are interesting and well-developed, although not entirely realistic at all times. Nicole and Darius are both quite stubborn and impulsive and as a result often do some rash and outrageous things. I like how Nicole's character defies stereotypes of the day - she is gifted in science and math and proves this to Darius even when he assumes things about her because she is a woman. The steamboat angle in the book is an interesting historical and scientific addition. I think we all can relate to Nicole's belief that she is the one that needs to fix everything herself, without God's help. Similarly, most can understand how Darius is trying to make up for what he believes is an unforgivable sin from his past. Both of them are trying to do things themselves when God is working on each one's behalf throughout the book. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction. It's a fun, enjoyable read.

I received a copy of this book from Bethany House in exchange for this review; all opinions are my own.
