The Winnowing Season by Cindy Woodsmall is the second book in the Amish Vines and Orchards series. I read and reviewed the first book, A Season for Tending and really enjoyed it, so I was eager to read the next book in the series as well.
The book begins where the first book leaves off, but if you haven't read the first book, there is a brief synopsis of the story so far at the beginning of this book. Rhoda Byler, Samuel and Jacob King, and several of their other family members are preparing to leave their current Amish community to establish an orchard and new Amish community in Maine. The move almost doesn't happen when Rhoda is forced to meet with her current district's bishop and defend herself against accusations. Once the characters move to Maine, they are faced with more unexpected difficulties that test their faith. The end of the book leaves the reader uncertain of what will happen next - and ready to read the third book in the series!
This book had a strong, suspenseful plot and continued to develop the main characters of Samuel, Jacob, and Rhoda as well as the secondary characters of Leah and Landon. Much of what happens in the book is not expected, but still believable. I am looking forward to seeing what happens to each of these characters in the next book.
