Book Review: The Bridesmaid

The Bridesmaid is the newest book in the Home to Hickory Hollow series by Beverly Lewis. A few months ago, I reviewed The Fiddler, the first book in the series. One thing that I really like about this series is that each book stands on its own. Each book contains a story that begins and ends within a single book. There is overlap from title to title in terms of the setting and some of the characters, which means if you read all the titles, you will get to know certain characters quite well.

The Bridesmaid is the story of Joanna Kurtz, a young Amish woman who is still unmarried, despite being older in the eyes of the Amish. Joanna is surprised to meet a pleasant young Amish man named Eben Troyer while both are away from their homes and visiting family in Virginia Beach. The twosome spend several days becoming friends and decide to write to each other when they return to their homes in Pennsylvania and Indiana. As Eben and Joanna grow closer through letters and phone calls, they run into a number of obstacles that cause them to question how their relationship can ever have a future.

I love the characters and the setting in these Hickory Hollow novels. Both aspects are developed well and make the novel extremely rich and enjoyable. Joanna and Eben both learn to trust God despite obstacles and both experience a tremendous amount of growth throughout the novel. Both discover that when God writes your story, he has your best interests at heart. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian fiction, especially Amish fiction.

I received a copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for this review. All opinions are my my own.

I've read this series...I love Beverly Lewis. She is one of the few authors whose books I actually purchase and read, again and again.
