Book Review: The Fiddler

I was so excited to see a new Beverly Lewis book become available to review through the Bethany House Book Reviewers Program. Her books are among some of my very favorite titles that I have read over the years.

The Fiddler is Beverly Lewis' most recent title. Amelia Devries, an Englisher, is a talented classical musician. Michael Hostetler is an Amishman who feels constrained by elements of his life, and still has not been baptized into the Amish faith. Both are trying to balance the expectations of their families with their own desires and hopes for their lives. A chance encounter in a rainstorm allows the unlikely pair to meet. They find it easy to talk with each other and realize that even though they come from different backgrounds, their circumstances are actually very similar.

Amelia decides she needs a respite from the weighty decisions she is trying to make and takes Michael up on his offer to visit his Amish community, Hickory Hollow. She feels surprisingly comfortable in Hickory Hollow and her time there sets her on the road to clarifying God's will for her life. Her meeting with Michael is the catalyst for big changes in both of their lives.

I really enjoyed this book. As a musician (vocal instead of instrumental), I like reading about music and feel strongly about the impact that the gift of music can make in the lives of people. I think most readers can appreciate how difficult in can be to balance the expectations of family and our own beliefs about what God wants for our lives. The setting of Hickory Hollow is such a refreshing change of pace from the everyday that I encounter - it almost feels like a vacation. For a charming, enjoyable read, I would recommend this book.

I did receive a free copy of this book to review through the Bethany House Book Reviewers program. All opinions are my own.
