A is 21 months old.
This week, we enjoyed lots of books on butterflies. I gathered many different books on the topic, but several of them were too long for a toddler. We still looked through most of them, but I have starred my (and my daughter's) favorites below.
Fancy Nancy: Bonjour Butterfly by Jane O'Connor - The illustrations in this book are so charming and lovely.
*Butterfly Colors by Helen Frost - I try to include a nonfiction title each week, and the photographs in this one are very nice. The book is small and there is only about one sentence per page.
Becoming Butterflies by Anne Rockwell - This book was too long for us, but I love Anne Rockwell and it would be great for older preschoolers. It really examines the life cycle of a butterfly in depth, in an age-appropriate manner.
Fly, Monarch, Fly! by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace - In addition to the story, there are a variety of informational pictures and diagrams on each page. Too long for us, but good for older children (preschool and up).
Butterflies in the Garden by Carol Lerner - The text in this book is also long, but we liked looking at the pictures of the different kinds of butterflies.
*I'm a Caterpillar by Jean Marzollo - This is a beginning reader book, which makes it great for a toddler. It has large illustrations and very short sentences on each page. It still does a nice job with the butterfly life cycle and introduces some new vocabulary.
*Waiting for Wings by Lois Ehlert - I love Lois Ehlert's illustrations and this book is no exception. The text is very simple and the illustrations are large and colorful, making it ideal for toddlers.
**Butterfly, Butterfly by Petr Horacek - This was by far my daughter's favorite book of the week. She asked me to read it over and over again, looking forward to the large pop-up butterfly on the last page.
I had many more ideas and web sites that I gathered, but honestly, we really didn't do any of them. I will save those links for another post!
We did some of the normal Tot School things for us, also, like drawing with chalk, pens, crayons, and colored pencils. She also did some paint with water and still loves her Leap Frog Letter Factory DVD. She is starting to recognize several letters and sounds including m and k.
In future weeks, I'm hoping to add in more crafts and "cooking" as my little girl likes to make things.
